about

The initial impression upon examining any trim, five-track set of remixes- between one up-next, highly respected Philly emcee/producer and one producer/musician/songwriter/creative genius from the northeastern outskirts of the same city- it's not unusual to expect something less than memorable. Especially when contemporary 'it names' aren't involved, to absorb a humbly-sized set of remixes [w/ 100% no-samples production] that raises the bar as high as this EP does is nothing less than impressive to all the independent/new-school hip-hop fans out there...

With a persistently-stimulating production vibe that soaks through the entire EP, comparisons of Rob Devious to higher-profile cross-over beatsmiths such as Nosaj Thing, Clams Casino, Jeremiah Jae and Glitch Mob are all well-afforded... Although both artists have just-recently begun reaching international attention, they have been well-established within Philadelphia's grassroots hip-hop circles for the better part of a decade...

With the five, core vocal tracks originating from the recording sessions for D.O.E BOY PHILLY's "Deuce & a Quarter Sh!t" EP, which has [mostly] slid past past the presumably-inscrutable radars of higher-profile online media "tastemakers." Nonetheless, #DAQS did earn unanimous praise among those more concerned with discovering fresh talent.. rather than being a cog in the popularity contest machine that is mainstream hip-hop... He's drawn comparison's such as 'Philly's Big K.R.I.T,' and 'Jay Electronica crossed with Ghostface'... (Some of the EP's biggest fans might even be confused as to why the tracks should be remixed.. If so, chances are you have yet to become acquainted with the work of multi-talented musician/producer, Rob Devious)...

Rob's musical style deviates rather dramatically from what fans may expect from a DBP song, but that's the point... The big, atmospheric knock creates a consistently engaging soundscape, and the timing of his various melody/beat-changes align with the mood of D.B.P's intense, introspective delivery in a way that amplifies the raw charisma of each and every line he exhales... Rob not-only reinvents each song's production aesthetic from scratch, but also juxtaposes floor-rumbling kickdrums/ subs/ basslines and manic effects against ghostly vocal samples, ambient backdrops, and dozens of subtle layers that could be easily missed if this EP isn't played at the appropriate volume, all syncing perfectly with D.O.E BOY's gritty, inspiring, crystal-clear rhymes to create a piece that's ideal for repeat-listens...

These two rising talents meshed on a 5-track EP to create something truly singular... We hope you enjoy this EP as much as we do... Thanks for your support...
